  • Abstract : This exhibit will display the over 2 decades of multimedia materials produced in the frame of the community revitalization efforts produced in the Language and Culture laboratory of CIESAS, in close collaboration with Linguapax. The Revitalization, Maintenance, and Development Linguistic Project (PRMDLC in Spanish) has been active in Mexico for over three decades. The PRMDLC starts from the recovery of peoples’ own language and culture, i.e., their own epistemologies. Producing oral and image-based culturally appropriate-sensitive materials, we recreate them in prestigious media such as a TV or a smartphone screen, where Indigenous children seldomly see their languages. Examples of the (re)vitalizing corpus (co or multi) authored by Indigenous speakers will be displayed; including, samples of the original art produced by Indigenous authors, which sustain the collection of printed, audio-visual, and multimedia materials in Indigenous languages, produced and consumed by speakers themselves, while at the same time aiming to impact a broader, mainstream audience. In this exhibit several of these materials will be presented, materials which are based on peoples own verbal art, including children’s language games such as riddles, tongue twisters and tales. This ongoing lasting production entails a direct collaboration between speakers and researchers, a collaborative approach in which the use of minoritized languages is favored through an indirect method of revitalization, based on multimedia incentives, i.e. film animation screening on special occasions at the community level (e.g. feasts). This method encourages spontaneous participation as engagement is a prerogative of the audience, overcoming corrective (school) approaches to language, not prescribing “correct” answers, while at the same time inviting a reflection on the implications this critical committed linguistics approach has for academia.

  • Title : 20 Years of Linguapax Asia and Beyond - Language for Peace

  • Abstract : Linguapax Asia, which represents the Asian Branch of the NGO Linguapax International,  makes the support for the preservation and revitalization of endangered languages one of its prime objectives. Other goals include advocacy of bilingual and multilingual education, facilitating intercultural understanding and fostering respect for linguistic diversity and linguistic heritage. Through its activities, Linguapax seeks to raise awareness of the links between language, identity, human rights and the quest for peace , hence the name linguapax, lingua “language” and pax “peace”. Linguapax Asia was inaugurated in 2004 with a symposium on Linguistic Diversity and Linguistic Ecology at the United Nations University HQ in Tokyo. As part of its 20th anniversary celebrations, we have prepared an exhibition of our work at CIRLIM IV 2025, including the publications of the symposia proceedings from 2004 to 2025, and other relevant publication authored or edited by our members, as well as materials of linguistic revitalization in the  Ryukyu Islands carried out by Dr. Sachiyo Fujita-Round.
